About Celebration

ABOUT OTR CELEBRATION

Nancy Gustafson, world acclaimed soprano and opera star, organized the first Celebration Benefit Concert in 1989 at Northwestern’s Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Nancy was inspired when her parents joined OTR’s cause of creating housing for adults with physical disabilities. Nancy’s younger brother, Bob, was born with cerebral palsy and deafness. Although Bob has severe disabilities, he is capable of living independently with the help of accessible, affordable housing designed to meet his needs. Through years of fundraising efforts by a group of dedicated parents, OTR built its first accessible, affordable, and independent apartment community in 1982. Then in 1990, as a young adult, Bob moved into OTR’s second apartment community in Evanston where he continues to live a full life today. Celebration is Over the Rainbow's longest standing fundraising event. This gorgeous concert celebrates Over the Rainbow's residents, mission, board, staff, and continuing future. Celebration has had world class performers such as Patti LuPone, Denyce Graves, Heather Headley, and Mandy Patinkin. In 2019 this sold out show raised over $540,000.00 for Over the Rainbow Association.
