At Over The Rainbow (OTR), we believe safe, accessible housing is just the beginning. What truly changes lives is the independence, dignity, and community that comes with it.

Michael Pearce knows this firsthand.

When Michael Pearce talks about his home at Over The Rainbow Hill Apartments in Evanston, one word keeps coming up: freedom.

“I absolutely love living here,” Michael shared about his home at Hill Apartments in Evanston. “The accessibility, all on one level, the location, and the activities we have, like art classes and resident council meetings. It’s by far the best place I’ve ever lived.”

But Michael’s journey to OTR was far from easy. In October 2008, a single accident changed his life forever, leaving him without his legs.

For me, it’s one of the best places to live on the entire planet Earth.”

“I was in a car accident on a rainy October day. I was in the back seat. The seatbelt both saved my life and caused part of my injury,” he recalled. “I’m definitely a miracle. By the grace of God, I survived.”

After multiple surgeries and months in rehabilitation hospitals, including Loyola, Hinsdale, and Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, Michael had to relearn the basics of daily life. “I had to learn how to shower, how to do activities, how to adapt. I even walked on prosthetics for a little while,” he said. “Rehab really taught me everything I know now to get through life.”

That determination and resilience brought Michael to OTR.

Here, he has found more than just an apartment; he’s found a true home.

“This place is by far the best place I’ve ever lived with a disability. It’s not a hospital or a nursing home. It’s a place where you can live independently, with dignity, and do what you want,” Michael said. “It’s more than accommodating; it really changes people’s lives.”

His story shows the power of perspective. Even after losing his legs, he has chosen gratitude over bitterness, optimism over despair. But, no one chooses positivity in isolation, having the ability to live freely and independently at OTR makes that outlook possible. Here, dignity and community give residents like Michael the foundation to truly thrive.

This is exactly why we are so committed to helping residents like Michael..

As Michael puts it best: For me, it’s one of the best places to live on the entire planet Earth.”
